Extreme Events - 2025 - Typhoon Danas (General)
Right, somehow i missed Danas. It's very early in the season. If i go back to live in Taiwan, which i'd like to, it's not gonna be in Pingtung. Man, that place seems to cop the rain brunt of every typhoon that hits Taiwan.
By contrast with Texas, which had 200-300mm, Pingtung has had 600+ in the last couple of days (which is relatively moderate by Pingtung's standards). There will be some damage for sure, but it won't be 67 dead.
I get that you can't really compare places that commonly get huge falls with a place like Texas, but something went horribly awry with the warnings.
I'm currently running a campground by a creek that is prone to flooding & regularly close it down based on my own observations when i think there's any danger. It's not that hard - if there's a suggestion of big rain coming, i shut that shit down.
There seems to have been some catastrophic failure to react by a range of people in Texas, though.
As you posted, cutting back on meteorological resources is very dumb, but even so, i wonder how they got it so wrong.
