Weather diary page

Sep 6, Guam: The temperature literally can't get any more regular. Still in the rainy season with occasional showers every day.

Sep 15, Northern Rivers: Finally Sep did deliver with some dry weather. Remained pretty cool at night, which is good, days in the low to mid 20s - ideal really. If only it could do that for longer. Last year, the fire barely needed lighting from mid-Aug, but still got one going tonight (down to 8-9), though this could be the last day of winter. Scarlett honeyeaters returned this year - they didn't come last year. Same with the friar birds. They love the melaleucas which are in full flower at this time of the year. Lots of red-browed finches. Saw massive python a week ago, though he's stayed away from the chooks so far. Haven't seen any goannas. Went whale-watching off of Gold Coast. There were quite a lot. Doing their return journey south back to Antarctica.

Sep 21, NR: Something is eating the chook eggs - normally i'd suspect a snake, but haven't seen anything - could be rats as eggs are being broken - snakes tend to swallow them whole. Liquid Amber started re-leafing about a week ago. Red browed finch appeared on porch - Fanny was able to approach it & even pet it. Didn't appear injured, but may have crashed into the window & was feeling dizzy - never seen a wild bird let you walk up & touch it (apart from lorikeets which are fearless). Rain was forecast for yesterday but didn't really eventuate - a rare occurrence. Planted wild tomatoes on Sep 19. Added 3 truck loads of roadbase to access road - whereas the last lot seemed to not have enough stones in the mix, this lot seems to have too many . Nights to get cold again this week - light the fire cold (down to 7-8C) - which is late in the season, but fine by me as it means dry air. Had one day up to 29, but usually around mid-20s. Campers able to access sites in 2wd.

Sep 25, Guam: We're getting a stretch of less-wet weather. We're still in the rainy season, but monthly averages do show rainfall falling off in September then really falling off in October.

Sep 27, NR: It was like a switch was flicked in Sep - after months of rain, it's hardly rained at all. My neighbour says only 12 mm in the gauge for the whole of Sep, & none forecast for the next week. Can't remember the last time we only had 12mm in a month. Still had the fire going last night, though it's probably the last time. Run of hottish days at the moment with highs up to 29C. Meanwhile in Taiwan the dial still seems stuck on 35C, which is 4C above ave. They might be in for a late typhoon season.
