May2026

Weather diary page

May 2, Guam: Several trees flowering, does seem to be a seasonal shift going on prompted by the slight increase in daylight.

May 4, Northern Rivers: A two-week rain period appears to have finally relented today with a brighter outlook for the next week. With drier air comes cooler night time temps - forecast to drop down to 5-6C overnight in a few days time, which will be the first seriously cold night - it's been 12-13C minimums mostly. Rain has been persistent, but no major events - in fact it would be ideal growing weather with daily patches of sunshine, though not putting in any veggies this year as the plan is to leave. Seems to be male-season with the wallabies - seen several fights, one of them quite serious - the winner was able to leap up & kick his opponent in the head.

May 14, NR: 'The May-yu' is in full force along with the full bog-up. That 'brighter outlook' lasted three days - it's rained every day since, up to 20mm most days, 40 today, & similar totals every day for next week, which will be a full month of rain with only 3 fine days in the mix. May is really a miserable month here. Had the annual incident of some fuckwit tearing up my access road in their big-arsed 4wd at the worst possible time last week - this year it was my neighbour's son - guess he takes after his dad (who did it last year). Gave him the 'when it rains heavily for weeks, the ground gets very wet' speech - the subtext being, 'stay off my fucking access road you moron in those conditions'. Spotted a pair of satin bower birds here this week - interesting around the same time i saw the regent bower bird last year. Had been hearing this weird bird call that sounds like a cartoon version of a falling bomb. Suspected bower birds might be making it then noticed a pair at north side of house. Then checked their call on internet - they make a wide range of calls but sure enough there was one actually listed as 'the falling bomb' call. That takes me up to 84 dif birds identified on property. Pecans have turned yellow.

May 19, NR: Big May-yu falls yesterday - all day steady rain. Useless Aussie weather bureau was forecasting 1-25mm but it ended up 100+ for most of the forecast area. Normally i say 'Disregard the lowest forecast figure & double the highest' but quadruple it would have gotten you closer to the actual amount yesterday. My improved drainage system for backyard is working to some extent, but still gets overwhelmed in downpours. I think at least it does drain a bit faster than before, but it needs to actually stop raining, which hasn't happened (apart from a 3-day reprieve) for over a month. The supposed El Nino can't come fast enough as far as i'm concerned.

May 19, Guam: We've had a few warm days with highs of 30-31 and high humidity. May and June are the hottest months but it only varies by a couple of degrees, five tops.
