March2025Weather diary page Mar 8, Northern Rivers: Ex-Cyclone Alfred made landfall on this day around Brisbane as a tropical storm. Created enormous media hysteria & predictions of winds up to 160kph but never got anywhere near that in reality. Complete contrast to the East Coast Low in 22 which got negligible media coverage but turned into a catastrophic event. The media is so stupid. They are both potentially dangerous low pressures - just one was called a cyclone at some stage before it made landfall. As it turned out, Alfred did drop a lot of rain here - over 500 mm over a few days - but the winds were not serious. It did have that typhoony feel to it - the wind coming in distinct gusts (approx 50-60kph) rather than being constantly windy. Significant periods of no wind. One night at the height of it, i went off to sleep with the windows deliberately left open so i could hear the gusts surging through the valley. It was nice - kinda made me sentimental. No serous damage from the wind though one branch from a black-butt gum came down on a fence & broke it. The creek broke its banks & flooded the flood plains but i've seen a few bigger floods here. As is normal, the land seemed to handle the initial rain not too bad considering the amount of it - i was even able to mow down at the creek a week or so later, but it raises the water-table so any follow up rain, which you will certainly get in autumn, just sits around. That's been exactly the case this time around. We've had a few more big rains since which has turned everything to sludge. I don't know whether there has ever been a dry autumn here, but not in my 6 years. March 15, Kanagawa: March in Kanagawa sucks. I'm glad this will be our last March here. Just as cold or colder than February, gray... no redeeming features whatsoever except one -- the days are getting longer. It's now getting light out by 5:30, so it's light when I leave for work. Won't miss Kanagawa in March, and won't miss work. Good riddance. March 25, Kanagawa: OK, March is getting a bit better. Windy, severe but short thunderstorm last night, and a few degrees above normal. Mid 20's for a five day period ending tomorrow, then highs will be in the low to mid teens for a few days, a bit below normal. Average high now is 16-18. I've made the decision to never again live in a place where one must own socks. Socks suck. And all the paraphernalia of cold, even mild, weather sucks. This includes long pants, jackets, hats for any reason other than to block sun, gloves, and scarves. Cold, dry weather sucks, as does slush, freezing rain, sleet, and any weather event that includes single digits. The only exception to this is when fog freezes on everything around it. Now that is beautiful. But is it worth it to live in a cold, miserable place to see that once every ten years or so? Fuck no. Granted, this area of Japan, indeed any area of Japan outside of the high mountains and parts of Hokkaido, never get bitterly cold, but it gets cold enough to need socks, and socks suck. March 29, Kanagawa: Another final blast cold front rolling through. I don't think it made it over 10 today. |
