June 8, Guam: On paper the temperature doesn't change here - typical highs of 30-31 with exceptional days of 32,so not to bad really. But so far June has felt hotter than the rest of the year and it's due to the lack of cloud cover and trade winds (single digits on Windy all week). That full-on, unobstructed tropical sun has a bite. C'mon rainy season!

June 20, Guam: Tropical storm Mekkhala gave us some needed rain and unexpected high winds for a a couple hours as it passed south of us yesterday, now on its way towards Taiwan. I read somewhere that one effect of the emerging El Nino will be storms forming farther east in the Pacific, and so far that seems to be the case. If I were in Taiwan or Okinawa, I'd be keeping my eye on Mekkhala.

June 21, Northern Rivers: Spent 3 weeks in Taiwan where the weather was good mostly - not too hot - moderate mei-yu arrived towards the end of my stay. Back now to the persistent rain here - some sunny patches in between but then days of rain - which seems normal for this area from Mar-June. The water-table is still very much up. Managed to get the lawnmower bogged yesterday. Not the first time that's happened but it was the first time i wasn't able to get it out using the normal methods - planks under the wheels - using the crow bar to lever it out. Had to get the car into to tow it, which came with the risk of getting that bogged as well, which i managed to avoid, but it still put ruts in the grass which need to be filled. Annoyingly, it wasn't really an emergency to cut it - i was tossing up whether to bother or not. It was quite long after i came back but it doesn't grow too fast in winter so i could easily leave it another couple of weeks - but thought i better do some as rain was forecast. In the end, i got bogged in the first 5 minutes then spent until 8pm trying to get it out. One of those situations where sitting on the sofa would have been far better.

June 24, NR: Notable thing so far is no frosts. In fact it's barely been below 10 all of June - just a few 7-8s (incl last few nights). Cold air is dry air as a rule, so the persistent rain is keeping night time temps up. Previous years June has been when we get the biggest frosts/coldest nights. Biggest frost i've seen here was June 1 in the first year. Another week of wet weather forecast - due to kick in from tomorrow.
