July2026

Weather diary page

July 1, Guam: 95W forming well east of Guam. This may be an example of El Nino causing Pacific storms to form farther east. Guam typically goes a few years between typhoons because they usually start forming around here then wander of west to bother you all. This will be our second storm this season if it hits.

July 6, Guam: Super typhoon Bavi. Rota is going to take pretty much a direct hit with 180mph sustained winds. It's moving fairly quickly so fingers crossed we don't lose power for days.

July 15, Northern Rivers: Wanted to bitch about the incessant fucking rain in this god-forsaken fucking place, but in light of Typhoon Bari, it's probably inappropriate. Every year i think surely it can't get any worse, but somehow it does. Here we are in the middle of what's meant to be the 'dry season' but we're looking at up to 10 inches of rain in the next week. That's annoying coz i'm trying to sell, but it's unsellable in those conditions. Even if/when it stops, will still take at least a month of dry weather for the paddocks to be dry enough to drive around on. Right now, the idea of getting a month of dry weather seems unimaginable. El-Nino is supposed to mean drought conditions for Australia's east coast, but it's the exact opposite so far.

July 22, NR: The big wet happened as advertised - a week plus of solid rain, about 150mm all up, & that on already saturated land. In fact it was an east coast low - they're not supposed to happen at this time of the year but someone forgot to tell the ECL. ECL's are basically cyclones that form below a certain latitude, just off the east coast, usually around Brisbane, then head south, unless they are blocked by a stationary high pressure, which often seems to happen. In that case they dump a ton of rain right where i'm living. There were a couple of days of high winds and driving rain as the low reached it's peak. The forecast, touch-wood, is for a fine week ahead. We're gonna need at least another month of that to give the underlying water-table time to drop & make the paddocks, campgrounds driveable again.
