January2025Weather diary page Jan 20, Kanagawa: Typical winter so far for the most part. Fuji is completely under snow from our vantage point as of ten days ago or so. The last couple of days were cold and cloudy but today is brilliant with little or no wind, sun, and a bit more humid after rain last night, the second minuscule rain we've had so far this year. It's been very dry. Jan in general, Northern Rivers: Been relatively (very low-bar) dry, though included a freak-storm towards the end of Jan that dropped a large gum tree on the community access road (& 2 fences), which i had to chainsaw up to cut the way out. Totally unforecast storm - forecast was 30% of 0-3mm. Ended up as 70mm & strong winds. Went crazy dark. Like dusk at 9am. Rolled in in two bursts from about 7am. That's unusual, but not unknown - usually happen in late afternoon, but can (rarely) happen in the middle of the night - or crack of dawn. The second one was the strong one. Took out power for 12 hours, internet for 36 hrs. Yeah, it was a decent thunder & lightning storm, but nothing crazy, yet straight-away the internet crashes - with zero explanation why. EE personal told me the towers are reliant on EE energy, which is weird in itself, they don't have back-up generators? But why was it still out 24 hrs after power restored? First tomatobloomed Jan 1. Others only bloomed towards end of Jan. Forming opinion that the great switch-a-rooney is happening - from wet cycle to dry. According to observations, weather is more extreme, but cycles still come & go. Feels like we're heading towards a dry cycle. Hollywood fires in Jan - interesting to see if that was a high tide mark for the dry cycle there - & it's all about to swap with the southern hemisphere. Bushfires risk in Aus is highest in the southern states - not here. They have had a hot dry summer. If that rolls through to next year, they could be in for a howler next year. Could be as soon as this year if Feb follows the same pattern. |
