December2025Weather diary page Dec 17, Northern Rivers: Been relatively dry for Dec, with an increasingly hot-dry 5-day forecast, then some rain after that, though the last two days have been oddly cool, mid-20s. Yesterday there was almost a coastal haze thing - not smoke from fires or fog but something you'd see on the coast - almost misty, but not rainy. Also felt like the day was somehow one hour slower than it should be - exactly one hour. Don't know what was up with that, but had that strong impression the whole day long. Tomatoes formed first fruit a couple of days ago, let's say Dec 15, which is quite early. Got a family of small honey-eaters living out back, which must be the cleanest birds in the world. Their main daytime activity seems to be taking dips in the birdbath, like 20 times a day, at least. Dec 21, Guam December has been very nice with many days having spotty showers. We've had only a handful of days with no rain at all. Nice, steady breeze every day. Temps never change, 25-32. Dec 25, NR: Big downpour a few nights ago - around 100mm - totally unforecast. There was 0-20 forecast for the following afternoon, but nothing for the evening/night that it actually fell. Heat has been oppressive - it's was so hot n steamy after the rain you could could cook a Chinese pork bao-dz in it. Ok, might be safer to cook cabbage one. Before that there was a run of several days in the mid 30s. Some of the chooks, particularly the older ones, are completely over the heat - you can see the pained expressions. Massive python on the wire-netting roof of chook-house but as he hadn't managed to get inside, i didn't bother him. He can eat all the rats he wants - just stay away from the eggs & chooks. Have been locking the chooks out when they go out for their evening roam which seems to be working in terms of keeping the pythons out. No more tomato plants fruiting after the first few. Dec 31, NR: Welcome spell of cooler weather - around mid-20s for the last week. Wasp season is in full swing - seems to be more than other years. There are different kinds, but it's only the small angry ones that cluster together around their nests that seem to be a problem. Been stung twice whilst on the lawnmower. Saw a large dingo down near south-east creek. All tomato plants have started to bear fruit. We've passed Dec without a mega-downpour (though flooding rain in northern qld). In previous years there has often been a big event in late Dec, so we've cleared that hurdle, though it can still come at any time in the next few months. |
