August2024Weather diary page Aug 4, Kanagawa: The heat continues. High today to hit 36, forecast highs 35 for the next 3 days then we may edge down a bit. Aug 8, Kanagawa: 7.1 Nankai Trough earthquake Aug 9, Kanagawa: It's 37 at 2:30. Unusually choppy water in the bay all day long. First noticed in the morning. High pressure, little to no wind, but choppy water. Noticed again at night during our walk. Before yesterday's quake, the water had been calm, glassy. Since the quake, it's had this uncharacteristic (for the weather) choppy quality. Aug 16, Kanagawa: Typhoon Ampil is passing east of Chiba. We're getting some rain and gusts, but that's it. Sort of a nothingburger but at least it brought the temperatures down. Tomorrow it's back up to 37. Aug 17, NR: Unwelcome, unseasonal downpour about 5 days ago. Wound up with over 100mm over two days (about 50 more than forecast) - enough to bring the water-table right up again. This is meant to be the dry season where the ground gets to dry out. On the positive side, it was forecast to be a double whammy, with another 80mm from a follow-up system, but thankfully that didn't eventuate, just a couple of days of drizzle. The other thing is the temps. We had a low of 15 one night, which is about double the ave for Aug. It's been above 11 for over a week - haven't had the fire going though with the humidity, it does feel a bit colder than it is. Been virtually impossible to get washing dry. We're now back to mostly fine weather, but still with above ave temps. Today is 26C, no lows under 9 for next week. Bush between house & shed has releafed - poplars & pecans are still bare. Flowers appearing on peach tree. Aug 23, Kanagawa: It appears the severe heat is about over starting this weekend. Today was a comfortable 33 and tomorrow is to be the same, but from there out the highs are 31-32 then dropping. Still, we're 2-3 degrees above normal. Night lows are still in the high 20's - 26-28 with 85-90% humidity, so it's not like we're getting any great relieve at night yet. But that's all about to change. Leaves on weeds are changing and some trees are showing signs of fall, or is it just surrender after six weeks of brutal heat that they're not used to? This is the first day I didn't use AC in the afternoon after work. A new typhoon is approaching, Shanshan. It looks like it will make landfall south of us in about five days. Aug 24, NR: Big story here is the winter heat. Have only lit the fire once (last night, down to 9) in two weeks, & the forecast for the next week is even warmer with highs around 29-30C! Very unseasonable. Probably presages a wet spring coming, unfortunately. With the above ave heat in Japan, we really do have some global warming happening. Often there's a contrast between the hemispheres - if it's extra hot in the north it's often colder than normal here, as if to balance things out, but this year is different. Aug 28, Kanagawa: Extreme heat is over, but it's still hitting 32-33 every day which is 2-3 degrees above normal. Typhoon Shanshan is lingering down south and acting unpredictably. Looks like it may be a major typhoon, perhaps the strongest to hit Japan in years. Aug 31, NR: Weather has gone haywire. 34C last two days & two more to come. That's crazy considering it's still winter. In past years i'd still be lighting the fire. It's been dry at least, but the bad news is that it's cut short my prime outdoor working time - & the grass already looks like it needs cutting - which is a good 6 weeks or more ahead of schedule. |
