TAIPEI--Foehn winds have blown into Dawu in southeastern Taiwan's Taitung County over the weekend, causing the mercury to rise to 37.5 degrees Celsius at one point, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) reported Sunday.

Temperatures monitored by a CWB station in Dawu showed that the mercury shot up to 37.5 degrees around 1 p.m. Saturday, the highest temperature detected anywhere in Taiwan so far this year, according to the weather bureau.

Temperatures in the Dawu area stood at 36.4 degrees at 11:13 a.m. Sunday, and the reading is expected to climb further later in the day, CWB meteorologists predicted.

The warm weather around Taiwan has been caused by warm southwesterly winds and a Pacific Ocean high pressure system, but temperatures have been particularly high because of foehn winds — warm, dry winds that blow down the sheltered side of mountains into valleys.

Temperatures are expected to remain high islandwide Sunday, reaching 34 degrees in the west, 32 degrees in the east and northeast, and 35 degrees in the southeast, the bureau said. "
