Zoom (General)

One of the big winners with the virus has been Zoom. Never heard of it before - now it's ubiquitous.

The founder, Eric Yuan, seems a bit mysterious. Born and raised in China, he went to America after graduating from university. Can't work out if he's still a citizen of China. His wikipedia profile is a scant stub. That's weird for someone who runs one of the biggest tech companies on the planet.

Probably paranoid but wonder about the world potentially handing over their facial recognition data to a company run by some dude that no one knows anything about?

I don't trust Zoom any farther than I can spit. Why should I? And yet, I use it all the time for my jobs. I have to. Same with Google. Our data is what they are milking us for.

Check this out: https://www.cnet.com/news/two-children-sue-google-for-allegedly-collecting-students-bio...

I've been saying for a long time that it's insane that schools, indeed entire governments, are requiring children to use Google products. What do they think Google, or Zoom, or any other corporation, is doing with that data?

It's unforgivable. I get paid to use Zoom, so I use Zoom, but I use no social media for personal purposes. No FB, no Google, no Zoom, nothing.

I use protonmail for mail, duckduckgo for search, and I always use a VPN on everything. People are too trusting. You are not being paranoid.

Zoom caught 'mistakenly' routing calls through China. Zoom also doesn't use end to end encryption. Given half the world is conducting high-level government meetings with Zoom - that's gotta be alarming.

"Parliament was advised last week by the National Cyber Security Centre, part of intelligence agency GCHQ, that Zoom should only be used for public business.

A parliamentary source said those involved were advised Zoom ought not be used for classified business and there was an explicit warning from NCSC “not use it to talk about things detrimental to the interests of China”."
