Typhoon Something (Weather)

Guessing this is going to turn into something even though it's a chart for a week hence - in 'position A' for a typhoon to form - right time of the year - just a matter of how big and where it goes. Judging from the high in place above it, Taiwan looks likely at this early stage.

Supposedly going up to Japan/Korea following a gap in the high created by a smaller system. If it does it will likely weaken before landfall as it hits colder sea temps - but shaping up as a big one so far

It's been very warm even way up here in northern Japan. According to this map from https://www.seatemperature.org/asia/, the region in southern Japan where this storm is predicted to hit has pretty high sea temperatures. This could be a major storm by Japan standards.

Meanwhile the bigger one, Lekima, is now forecast to graze northern Taiwan. Then there's another one forming - so 'peak season' is living up to its name

Francisco must be hitting southern Japan quite hard. I don't think this region gets many typhoons that haven't already weakened significantly. Francisco is still getting gusts of 100kt / 115mph. That could certainly stir things up.

It looks like S. Korea is going to get a taste of it as well.

Now it's looking like the newly formed one could be the biggest of the lot

Meanwhile Lekima is tracking towards northern Taiwan - due there around Thurs

That northward turn could make this a particularly dangerous typhoon for Taiwan, especially if it shifts south a bit before making landfall.

Gusting up to 125kts according JTWC - maybe with potential to get even bigger considering it's conventional trajectory across warm seas.

Anywhere on east coast would need to be on alert - the 2016 one was also cruising straight to Ilan/Keelung and no one down south was worried about it. There was less than 24 hrs warning in the end to prepare for a cat 5

Predicted to be travelling at a fair speed so hopefully that will mitigate the destruction

I have no idea what the shipping routes are in this area, but I suspect this is very disruptive to shippers. How do they avoid this mess?

EDIT: Lekima is a monster.

You'd be a brave captain to try picking the gap!

Guess it plays havoc with the war games various countries like playing in that area as well!

CWB has Lekima skating just north of Taipei - can remember the excitement of a 10-million working/studying population asking - 'will we get a day off?'

They did get their day off in Taipei - would have thought they are pretty lucky - Lekima is staying well north of Taiwan -I'll be surprised if there's much drama there.

Could make a decent mess in China though with an area just south of Shanghai in the firing line

Not that often you see a full-scale typhoon hit that far north on the coast of China - imagine there will be some destruction

Fohen wind, i assume, associated with typhoon Lekima - yesterday Kinmen hit 39.9 while Taitung was 34.2 at 1am this morning - want to crank up the air con to sleep through that!

According to this report: "Typhoon Lekima made landfall early on Saturday in the eastern province of Zhejiang with maximum winds of 116 mph (187 km/h"
18 killed, 14 missing - most from a landslide that occurred when a natural dam wall collapsed
One million people were evacuated! That's something the Chinese do well these days - in the old days Lekima may have taken out hundreds
