Northern Japan Beach in Winter (Weather)

The picture pretty much says it all, and this was a really, really nice day! I took the second picture to capture the anti-erosion methods and materials used. You can't see it too well from the pictures, but these cement things, though flat and easy to walk on, have holes in them that are at least 3 feet deep, yet this looked like a very inviting place to walk. We got about 20 feet into them before I realized how dangerous it was. I mean, you really had to watch your step but it was such a pretty day that we kept looking up. Kind of scary actually.

So are the big storms there winter storms? I assume they wouldn't get hit by typhoon seas too badly being that far north
