I've often asked myself that very question. I think they just like playing around with the pictures. It has never made any sense to me, and I don't think there's any sense to it. It's a design feature, like wallpaper or the stickers some people put on their cars. And, it gives the impression that somebody is doing their job.

30%
40%

I doubt you are going to know the ans to this question, but do you have any idea as to the significance of the darker rain cloud icon on CWB? Originally i assumed it indicated a greater chance of rain, but they've listed it as 30%, while the lighter colored cloud comes in at 40%, so it can't be that. Or is it just one of those un-understandable things that you come across in our beloved Taiwan?

Yeah, you beat me to it with that post. They might want to check their computer programme or get the guy who's punching in the info to take a look out the window or something, but 0% seemed extremely rash. Showers here as well. 8.5 ml last night, i think they had that at 10%. You really gotta wonder what's going on in that office when they were predicting 80-90% for several days and there was virtually nothing, and then as soon as they switch to 10 and 0, we get decent falls.

The CWB has lost what little credibility it had left with me in the last six hours. They are predicting 0% chance, 0, of rain for Taitung County tonight, yet we had extremely heavy rain here. It's raining now.

One would think they would cover their asses by predicting at least a 10% chance. This used to happen all the time in Pingtung. The forecast was for 0% chance of rain as we were getting pummeled by not only rain, but extreme lightning.

These are very localized downpours, but they're heavy. I need to get a rain gauge. I wonder where the CWB puts theirs? Certainly not anywhere where we live.

Yeah, that's a great radar - how do you like your storm cell - small, medium, or large? (the one off the coast of China really does look quite serious). Interestingly, they sprung up over Taiwan just as it got dark - is that coincidence our does the drop in temperature set something off?

And we did get a decent short sharp shower just then. After threatening to rain for at least a week, you get the feeling we might get a couple of inches when it does break.

Again, we're getting some heavy showers tonight. Check out the cell just next to Chenggong. I've noticed the rain seems to collect there. It's obviously spilling over our way, but I doubt much is happening south of here.

This kind of rain we are getting now would be acid rain - hazy skies - and a prolonged dry period allowing a build up of pollution and not enough rain falling to really wash it out. This is about the only month that gets acid rain in Taidong (though in taipei they get it a lot more of course), and i can see why.

Apr: 62, 12, 65.6, 228, (biggest fall 14.5 on Apr 27)

May 286.5, 11, 155.9, 514.5, (198ml on May 29)

July: 122 8, 270.5, 1042.5 well below ave, included 3 stinking hot weeks of virtually no rain. XC was much drier than other parts of Taidong. CWB said 315ml for TD, but less than half of that here.

August: 556 7, 302(ave) 1598.5 (369 and 98 on two days)

September: 80.5, 6, 344.6 (ave), 1675 (way below ave - no sig typ rain)

October: 37 ,6, 182.3(ave), 1718 (way below ave - no sig typ rain)

November:93,4, 79.2 (ave), 1811 (well spaced falls - connected to ppe typ

December:79, 5, 40.5 (ave), 1890 (well spaced - connect ppe typ)

TOTAL: 1890 1779.6

NOTE: Ave figures taken from CWB site. 2012 figures from my own rain guage in Xing Chang.

Notes: Afterall, the rainfall for 2012 was pretty 111 ml higher than the ave. July was the hot dry one, with more typ activity in Aug offering some relief. Excellent 'farming falls' in Nov, Dec, making watering of the garden almost unnecessary for the past two months.
