Olympics Marathon to be relocated due to Tokyo heat (reply)

The climate here is great. The summer temperatures can be very unpredictable, and the last two years have seen unusual heat waves. Most of the summer in central Japan will be in the 20's, but if the last two years indicate a trend, then the summer of 2020 could be particularly bad.

Sapporo, on the other hand, will almost certainly be cooler.

This is going to put an additional squeeze on airline tickets though.

Olympics Marathon to be relocated due to Tokyo heat

The question is, why did the Japanese committee choose to hold the event during the height of summer (July August)? Apart from the extremes of summer and winter, Tokyo has a pretty agreeable climate doesn't it?
