An example of the 'erratic effect' with the monsoons in India that have triggered landslides resulting in over 400 deaths. Is there a co-relation to earthquakes in that there's a 'pressure build-up' thing happening?

Monsoons are essential rain bringers but appear to have become erratic with the hits being harder and the misses being drought events. The between-drinks time is the pressure-cooker that pushes 'til something gives

Wonder if there are weather fault-line equivalents?

Another 'unprecedented' story - with possible 'tipping point' connotations - 100 000 hectares of fires burning in the arctic regions - some of which involve the underlying peat having caught fire.

"In June alone, the WMO said, Arctic fires emitted 50 megatonnes of CO2, equal to Sweden’s total annual emissions."

Northern hemisphere summer - is this the big one? (reply)

That's interesting - although there's not the Armageddon type conditions in Europe and north America that i'd expected, they are still breaking heat records - several more fell this week. Was also the hottest June on record for Europe.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/jul/24/summers-second-heatwave-set-to-break-reco...

We'd need to know more about how the weather patterns work to properly analyse the situation in Japan - could it be that the 'omega block' referred to in the above article - "a high-pressure pattern that blocks and diverts the jet stream, allowing a mass of hot air to flow up from northern Africa and the Iberian peninsula " (causing the extreme heat in Europe), somehow be having a cooling effect in Japan?

Northern hemisphere summer - is this the big one? (reply)

I have to get around to doing some research on how unusual (if truly unusual) this summer is in northern Japan. When I first got here, everyone complained about the hot, muggy summers. I have a long sleeve shirt on in the house and if I were go for a walk right now (7AM) I'd put pants on. We got back on July 4, and most days it has not broken 20.

Northern hemisphere summer - is this the big one? (reply)

At this stage i don't see too many signs that this summer is 'the big one' - in fact 'neutral' seems to be the key word - though i still think a dramatic northern summer is on the cards in the next few years. (Yes, there are places experiencing extreme conditions but it's not the 'tipping point' season i'd expected - not so far)

Meteorologists are saying that it's a neutral year regarding El Nino-La Nina - and the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) is also neutral - so is it the calm before the storm?

The IOD is predicted to head into 'positive' territory which indicates a dry spring-summer for Aus meaning worse bushfire conditions - but they were also saying a dry winter before and it bucketed down for months - so we'll see ...
