Australian Cyclone Season 2020 (Weather)

by dulan drift, Tuesday, February 04, 2020, 10:28 (183 days ago)

There have already been some low pressures that have caused flooding in qld, a smallish cyclone on the WA north coast, but now it looks like the season is set to crank it up. We'll see if an extreme summer of heat triggers a big cyclone season.

This is the 'windy' image for 10 days ahead - if that happens then, similar to last year, it will be a big cyclone wandering well south of where they're meant to go.

This is the same cyclone a few more days on. If it winds up that far south then that will be totally nuts - way beyond where a cyclone has ever gone before i'd wager

Windy is a great site predicting wind up to 10 days out - which is a lot - so could easily be wrong - i assume it must be.

I love Windy. Great site. And that's one heck of a storm.

Cyclone Damien made landfall in Karratha, north coast of WA as a cat 3. Pretty remote area but reports of damage to houses.

The potential cyclone from previous post that Windy had tracking down the east coast of Aus is no longer showing up on models - did think it was unlikely. Still think there might be one cyclone this year that gets further south than usual into the big populated areas

Text between brothers - luckily they live next door to each other so he was able to go directly to his brother's house for shelter

Cyclone Uesi was modelled to roll down the south east coast of Australia, That was always improbable and turns out it won't happen but it is going to go over Lord Howe Island which is 600km off shore and also surprisingly well south for a cyclone. Rated a cat 3, it will drop to Cat 2 by the time it gets there. Eventually forecast to end up in the south island of NZ - not as a cyclone but still the same system.

Meanwhile it is whipping up the surf. In Taiwan people have long been wary of beach frontage properties but they are still some of the most expensive real estate in Australia and US. Wouldn't like to have my life savings invested in one now though.

This is a smallish but intense cyclone forecast for the weekend. The isobars are so close together it comes out as a large black dot - with a low pressure of 967 - which seems very low. 'Windy' doesn't have it as anything so dramatic so see what happens

Technically, this is not classified as a cyclone but it is one for all intents and purposes. It's called an 'east coast low' which forms in winter off of the mid-east coast of Australia then usually travels south. It's rotating around a core with a 995 barometric reading. There was one a couple of weeks ago now we have another. The first caused erosion due to monstrous surf that left a few multi-million dollar 'absolute beach-frontage' houses teetering over the edge of collapsed sand banks. This one is causing flooding around Sydney with the likelihood of more erosion events tomorrow.
