Typhoon Khanun (Weather)

Even though it's going through the northern Philippines as a Tropical Storm, Khanun is causing havoc on the east coast of Taiwan - this is not so surprising as at it's a disorganised typhoon and at this time of the year the north east monsoon brings its cold air into the mix and then you've got the ingredients for the perfect rain storm - it was the same scenario that sent two buses of the edge of Su Hwa highway several years ago

Over 300 mil in the last 12 hours here and about 500 since yesterday. Other places are pushing past 1000 mil over the last three days

Can hear the landslides in the mountains and been dealing with issues on my land all morning

Apparently the road down from my place is out

Been a lull, thankfully, but looks like another ramp-up is coming

Had an issue with a 'pop-up river' forming and a bracing hour in the rain reinforcing the channel for it out onto the road drain

Not nice to see your topsoil shooting off down the drain, but better than seeing it wash the chicken house away

Check out the amount of potential moisture Khanun loosely commands

Wherever that mass gets pulled across can expect destruction

News says a landslide has gone through a hotel in Chih Ben

Has dropped off here, mercifully, but still the odd burst with some serious venom and looks set to rain through the night

The last time we were in Jinlun, someone had built a rather large hotel... next to the riverbed. I think it is technically on the floodplain.

Yeah, that looks pretty ominous.

Still getting some malicious downpours but not at the sustained rate of yesterday

However, I can see a massive disaster looming for parts of southern China - looks like Hong Kong, Macau, and Hainan will again be in the firing line

After a brief but very intense lightning storm as a kind of closing fireworks ceremony, Khanun has finally dissipated

In the end, after days of rain, it was remarkable how suddenly the main body of the storm seemed to disappear in a puff of smoke as soon as it reached China

Once again it showed that a typhoon doesn't have to be a cat 5 to be dangerous - and the destruction can happen well away from the eye of the storm when its circulation is more disorganised

Actually a similar scenario to a typhoon that happened this time last year - typhoon tracking to the south of Taiwan, moving slowly, interacting with the north east monsoon and circulating massive raIn onto the east coast
