Taitung County to host Asian surfing competition
TAIPEI — Taiwan will host the first competition sanctioned by the Asian Surf Championship (ASC) later this month in Taitung County, the local government said yesterday.

The Taitung County International Surf Challenge, which will beheld Nov. 26-27, will lift Taiwan’s image as a tourism destination and put the island’s beautiful east coast on the worldwide surf map, Taitung County Magistrate Justin Huang said at a press conference in Taipei.

The ASC sanctioned event also means recognition of Taitung as one of the best places to surf in Asia, after Malaysia, Bali and Thailand, he said.

On the sidelines of the surfing competition, there will be a Saturday night party that will feature live performances by local and foreign bands, as well as a barbecue and a selection of local delicacies, he said.

The competition, to be held at Jinzun Harbor in Donghe Township, will include Men’s Open Shortboard, Men’s Open Longboard and Groms (under 18). The total prize money is NT$300,000 (US$9920).

Online registration for the competition will remain open until Nov. 22.
